Steel packaging provides the flexibility needed to create the stand-out style required. When creative director Candy Brophy set out to create a packaging concept that was modern with a classic edge, steel was the obvious material for showcasing the product’s offering.

The Blo Greyscale Paint Company specifically produces all shades of black, white and grey paints for the home. It is unique as the only greyscale specific paint product range on the market and is aimed at consumers looking for the perfect shade of greyscale in their space.

This product aims to fill a niche group within the home improvement market and the design concept behind the tins is that it would not only reflect the colour of the paint, but attract the consumer to the desired finish they want on their walls.

Additionally, steel is formable, allowing for embossing and debossing. This maximises shelf impact, but also eliminates the need for secondary labelling.

“Steel was chosen for the Blo Greyscale Paint Project because it has crisp clean lines and an architectural quality that I believe can’t be achieved with a plastic moulded bucket. The stylised tin handle references high end finishes on metal door hardware and has a Deco quality that all trigger the intended use and end user. The target market would be an interior designer that is form focused. The soft matt finish to both tin and label all juxtaposed with the cold hard tin material, result in a well resolved product and brand identity.”

There is of course another reason steel is a popular choice for paint products. Its unrivalled strength means it can withstand rigorous in-store mixing as well as multi-layer stacking during transport and storage.

Furthermore, steel is versatile and suited to a wide range of dispensing options with volumes from 50ml up to 40l. For BLo Greyscale Paint, this means its products have the potential to be made available in a variety of tin sizes and dispensing options such as spray cans.
